“Happy and blest be Faustus evermore!”
On April 7, 2017, 78 donors came together to support the arts and helped Brave Spirits raise $4,005, money that will be instrumental in our ability to bring classical theatre to the residents of Alexandria and the surrounding areas. This amount was double our original goal of $2,000! Thank you so much to everyone who made it possible!
By supporting Brave Spirits during Spring2ACTion, you will help us make magic with a production of Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, but with a Brave Spirits twist–the part of John Faustus will be changed to a Joan. By re-gendering the titular character, BST alters an Everyman figure to become an Everywoman figure. Joan, an ambitious, brilliant woman seeks to reach the heights of knowledge and power, but is brought down by the rules of the world in which she lives. A female Faustus (and mostly female cast) will play with institutionalized patriarchal tropes in order to both examine and exploit them. We look forward to exploring with our audience how this 400-year-old play still has the power to speak to our current political and cultural moment.
