Charlene V. Smith is an actor, director, and scholar, who has worked in the DC metropolitan area since 2006. She co-founded Brave Spirits Theatre in 2011 and became Artistic Director in 2014. For BST, she has directed The Changeling, Coriolanus, Antony and Cleopatra, ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Richard III and The Two Noble Kinsmen and co-directed The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Bloody Banquet. Charlene completed her BA in English and Theatre at the College of William and Mary and studied at the London Dramatic Academy. She has an MLitt and an MFA in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin College (now University) in partnership with the American Shakespeare Center. She is the head editor of Rogue Shakespeare: Stagecraft and Scholarship in an Ensemble-Based MFA Company and her article “Margaret of Anjou: Shakespeare’s Adapted Heroine” appears in The Palgrave Handbook of Shakespeare’s Queens.
Jessica is an actor, director, graphic designer, and mother to the best little man ever. For BST she has performed in Romeo and Juliet and The Bloody Banquet and directed As You Like Itand A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She has performed across the country and with the American Shakespeare Center (Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Love’s Labours Lost); The Theater at Monmouth (Antony and Cleopatra, The Liar, As You Like It); 1st Stage (The Violet Hour, Holiday). She works as a graphic designer at Signature Theatre. She is proud to be a part of BST and its incredible mission.

Casey staged violence for BST’s Coriolanus, The Changeling, As You Like It, The Maid’s Tragedy, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, directed The Duchess of Malfi and co-directed The Bloody Banquet. A Certified Fight Director with the Society of American Fight Directors, Casey has arranged fights for more than four hundred productions throughout the country, including extensive work with the Folger, Round House, Signature, and Rorschach Theatres. He designed blood effects for Faction of Fools’ Titus Andronicus and Constellation Theatre’s Lieutenant of Inishmore, as well as the Men at Arms: Reforged web series, and he serves as an audition choreographer for Marvel Universe Live. Casey has been an instructor at Catholic University, the University of Mary Washington, University of Maryland – Baltimore County, as well as a guest artist for Fight Directors Canada and the Nordic Stagefight Society. Claire is a dramaturg, theatre practitioner, and scholar of early modern drama whose performance-based research focuses on staging and gesture. Her dramaturgy credits with BST include The Changeling, The Duchess of Malfi, Doctor Faustus, ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore, A King and No King, and The Bloody Banquet. She has also served as a dramaturg at the American Shakespeare Center, as an education editor for “The Shakespeare Standard”, and previously taught high school theater arts. Claire has an MLitt in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin University. Her work on staging dismemberment in early modern drama appeared in Renaissance Papers 2008.

Zach recently performed in The Lady with the Little Dog (Quotidian), War of the Worlds (SCENA), Friendship Betrayed (WSC Avant Bard), and Madwoman of Chaillot (WSC Avant Bard). Victoria is a classically-trained actor, teaching artist, and director, and a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. Christina Vergara Andrews has built a career leading projects that promote diversity, advocate learning, and reflect current trends in the business marketplace. She currently runs her own consulting firm, Holara, providing strategic and project support to non-profits and associations. Previously, she served as Vice President of Content Development for NAB Show, a trade show serving over 90,000 global media and technology professionals. Before NAB, Christina was Senior Vice President of Educational Programs for Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), a U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to developing women leaders in cable media. In addition to her “day job,” Christina is on the Board of Directors for the Magdalena Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing members of impoverished communities in the Magdalena region of Colombia with the tools, resources, and college-level education to better their communities and neighborhoods. Her passion for the arts and early career pursuits as a vocalist and actor provide a foundational belief in the power of the arts to transform lives and communities. She earned her BA in Music from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a graduate of the Laura Henry Studio, a Meisner-based conservatory in Los Angeles.
Valerie is a DC-based actor, designer, entrepreneur and photographer. As a performer, she has a varied resume that spans classics to contemporary, musicals to straight plays, comedies to tragedies, and everything in between. Valerie served on the board of Theatre Pro Rata for four years, and served as Board Chair for two, and held internships at the Guthrie Theater and Park Square Theatre. She currently works as a web designer/developer for the National Association of Broadcasters, as well as co-operating Chisel and Brand, a web design and marketing company, and running BroadwayMusicalHome.com. Valerie has a BA in Theatre Performance from Pomona College and studied theatre at the London Dramatic Academy.
Kate’s first life was in the theater as an actor, director, children’s acting instructor, and founder of a 501c3 theatre. Kate’s second life was as a VP of Sales & Education for global corporations in the Beauty & Wellness industry. Kate’s third life is founder and owner of Mindful Well-being. Inc. We teach yoga & meditation in assisted living residences, specializing in the niche market of limited mobility (wheelchair and walker required) residents. The constant throughout life has been a passion for theatre – onstage, offstage, backstage, audience.
Diana is an actor and playwright in the DC area, and had the honor of working with Brave Spirits on their production of The Trojan Women Project. She has an AA in Theatre Performance from Montgomery College.
Lisa Hill-Corley is an actor and fiction writer in Northern Virginia who has appeared in over 45 shows throughout the DC region. She holds an MFA in fiction from George Mason University, where she was the fiction editor of So to Speak: a feminist journal of language and art. Her work has appeared in The Oklahoma Review and Diverse Voices Quarterly. She is currently a managing editor for alumnae feminist press Gazing Grain.
Sally Paustian is a scientific writer and editor specializing in interdisciplinary writing, particularly focused on intersections between science and language, and is the lead scientific writer and project manager for several government clients. She received a BA in biology from Boston University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Hamline University, both of which allowed her to feed her interests in anatomy, ecology, languages, and writing about body parts. Sally has written and acted in plays, worked and volunteered as a theatrical usher, and taken classes at the Guthrie Theatre and Shakespeare Theatre Company. Since moving to the DC area in late 2015, Sally has pursued her theatrical interests in the audience of as many musicals and classical plays as she can find.
Dr. J. Simmons joined the Board of Directors in 2018 after discovering Brave Spirits as a patron in the spring of 2017. His diverse professional and educational experience includes theatre production, non-profit organization, and project management. J. earned his BFA in Theatre Lighting Design/Technology from Florida State University in 1999 and spent the next seven years working with theatres in Raleigh, NC, and Blacksburg, VA as a lighting designer and stage manager. Afterward, J. applied his experience from non-profit theatres to founding the open source non-profit Mach 30 (mach30.org). He has since consulted for a number of non-profits on startup activities, consensus based decision making, and conflict resolution. In 2014 J. completed his Ph.D. at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Space Systems Engineering. Today he works as a team lead at Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems supporting the development of next generation launch vehicles. J. is thrilled to be coming back to his theatrical roots and is honored to serve during the Histories project.
