Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's

The Changeling

October 18 – November 18, 2018
In repertory with The Duchess of Malfi
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 8pm
Saturday at 3pm and 8pm
Sunday at 2pm and 7pm

In this gripping tale, Beatrice-Joanna is eager to marry the man she loves. In order to achieve this freedom, she hires her loathsome servant De Flores to murder her fiancé. When she offers money and jewels to pay him, he refuses, demanding instead her virginity. Though four hundred years old, this dark play presents an all too familiar picture of men’s manipulation and degradation of women.

Join us in the fall of 2018 and explore depraved violence, sexual obsession, and female determination with us in two of the greatest tragedies written for the early modern stage.

A note about content: The staging and discussion of these plays will engage with depictions of sexual assault, mental illness, ableism, and self-harm.  Please be advised that gunfire will be used in both shows.

These shows are not recommended for children under the age of 16.

Brave Spirits Theatre’s The Changeling is a moving tale of the devastation both seen and felt in the trauma inflicted upon women. Smith’s creativity for telling the story of that trauma in a compelling and brutal way without subjecting its audience to scenes of sexual assault is a masterful work of art and is not to be missed.

Claudia Bach, Theatre Bloom

Right off, true to the Urban Dictionary definition of scrappy, “seemingly small and unthreatening but shockingly able to kick your ass and anyone else’s,” Brave Spirits has produced another work of stimulating, not-for-the-timid theater full of verse and violence.
